Last Minute Gift of Appreciation to Your Ex

After handling divorces, child support, custody and paternity matters for more than 20 years, I am well aware that not everyone has a happy and amicable relationship with their ex-spouse or ex-partner. I know that.  But, what I also know (though not an easy task), are that words of thanks or appreciation can go a long way in those difficult relationships.

When I mention to clients the idea of expressing appreciation to their ex, they are often at a loss for words. After all, what could they possibly say to their ex that would resemble some form of appreciation when so much has gone wrong?

Here, I give you few things you might consider saying to your ex as your holiday gift to them (and to your children):

  1. “I appreciate your efforts in co-parenting our children”
  2. Thank you for working hard and providing us with financial support”
  3. “Thank you for being a good parent to our children”

Saying these, or other words of appreciation in-person may be difficult, so feel free to email, write, or text your ex-spouse or ex-partner. It’s the sentiment that counts, not the mode of appreciation. And, come 2017, you may be surprised that those few words of appreciation can help change the tone, and possibly the dynamic, of your relationship with your ex-spouse or ex-partner.

Van Oorschot Law Group wishes you and your family a joyous holiday season and happy New Year.
